One conserved source, form as a free variable
1 min
Everything published here has one conserved source of meaning. The root is the corpus, the prose a person wrote. From the corpus a machine derives a structured graph: one idea per node, each node carrying provenance back to the exact place in the prose it came from, each node knowing what it sits inside and what sits inside it. The graph is a derivation and a projection, never a master copy. If the graph is lost or its schema changes, you regenerate it from the prose. What we own, version, and protect is the corpus; everything else is rebuilt from it.
From the graph, expressions are rendered. An expression is the idea in a chosen form, and form here means everything about how the idea is presented: the modality, whether it is read or watched or heard or walked through spatially or stepped through in a line; the length; the sequence; and the comprehension level. The form is a free variable. It can be changed arbitrarily, and the system is under no obligation to preserve any of it. A modem of the ordinary kind is a fidelity device, the same bits out as in. This is a translating modem. It conserves meaning and treats form as the thing to be spent freely in service of landing the meaning.

The conservation law

What licenses that freedom without letting it drift into spin is a gate. Before an expression is released, a determination engine evaluates it against a comprehension criterion: can a reader at the target comprehension level recover the source idea from this expression and restate it? Not: does this expression resemble the source? Resemblance is the wrong test, because the whole point is that the form may need to be unrecognizable to land. The right test is whether the idea came through. The engine returns a probability that the target reader gets it, a verdict, and the point in the expression where comprehension is lost, so that a failing expression can be regenerated in a different form aimed at exactly where it lost the reader, and the loop runs until the criterion is met. That is reverse navigation again, pointed at the explanation itself instead of at the learner: the destination is the reader understanding, and the system derives backward whatever form gets there.
The engine can be anything that scores meaning-survival at a stated comprehension level, including a small classifier running on your own box. The shape that fits the slot best is a judgment model that returns a probability and a confidence rather than prose, so the verdict is a number the pipeline can act on and log, and several of those exist now at every size. I am not naming one, because the right engine will change and the method does not depend on which. The method is the gate and the law, not the product.
The law stated in one line: the conserved quantity is the true idea, and the form is free.

The dial

The target comprehension level is not fixed, and this is the part that makes it a tool rather than a translation service. It is a dial the reader holds. At one end is fourth-grade comprehension, the level at which anyone can get the one idea. At the other end is the raw source, the dense original with nothing simplified. In between is every level a person might want on a given day. The same source idea is deliverable at any setting, and the gate conserves the meaning at each one. Slide toward plain and you get the idea in the fewest, simplest moves that still carry it. Slide toward raw and you get the author's own words. The Buckyball explorer makes the dial spatial: zooming inward toward the seed is sliding toward raw, because the seed is the corpus itself. Read, watch, and listen are not three products. They are three positions a person can take with respect to the same conserved idea. This document is the raw end of the dial. The short video that sits beside it is the other end. Pick whichever one lands.

Visibility is a switch you hold

The dial has a default, and the default comes from the second secret. The thing that shapes an explanation to a particular person is that person's own SOUL: their preferred way of taking things in, read or watch or listen or wander or step; their comprehension level; what they already know; what their body and attention need. The translating modem conditions the form on that file. One source idea becomes as many personal expressions as there are people receiving it, each gated by the same law.
Here is what matters about that file, and it is not really about privacy. It is about visibility, and who controls it. A SOUL is a bio. If you are writing a bio, you want a say in who gets to read it, and in every system you have used so far that say has been a request: you ask the platform to keep something private, and the platform decides, and the platform keeps a copy either way. In this method the visibility of your file is a switch at your own row, and you hold it. Nothing in your SOUL reaches any seat until you flip it, and when you flip it you choose how far it goes: to one seat, to a circle, to everyone. Leave the switch where it is and your file never makes it in at all. Nobody asks you for it, nobody collects it, nobody has it to lose. Flip it and a seat that is serving you can read exactly what you chose to show, and the explanation it builds for you is shaped by that and by nothing else. The transform runs against what you made visible. One source is demodulated into a thousand personal expressions, and what the publisher knows about each of the thousand readers is precisely what each one chose to reveal, which is often nothing but a level and a mode. You can share your whole SOUL freely with any seat that will use it to serve you, because your sovereignty does not live in the file. It lives in the switch, which is yours.
I want to be plain about why that is more than a privacy nicety. Personalization has been understood as something a publisher does to you, and to do it to you the publisher had to know you, so personalization meant collection. A food bank, a school, a small cooperative, a community organization cannot afford to run a collection operation and should not want to, which under the old understanding meant they could not offer personalization at all, and the only parties who could were the ones large enough to hoard profiles. The translating modem turns that around. The reader decides what is visible, the small group serves what it is shown, and every person gets the version of an idea they can absorb at the level they chose, without anyone becoming a data broker to make it happen. It is safety without a landlord, applied to attention: no one above you has to hold your file for you to be served like yourself.

The ethical boundary, in the wiring

I have spent this whole document telling you not to trust promises, so I am not going to govern the most dangerous component in it with one. The boundary between a translating modem and a persuasion engine is a single question: what does the gate measure? Measure whether the reader can recover the source idea and you have a translating modem, a way to carry a community's own ideas to its own people in whatever form they can receive. Measure whether the reader arrived at a desired belief and you have a persuasion engine, and with personalization attached, a very good one. So the boundary goes in the wiring, three ways. First, the gate's criterion is fixed and published: it takes the source node and the expression, it scores recovery of the idea, and there is no input for a target belief, so there is nothing to point it at. Second, the gate's code is open, so anyone can read what it measures, and a gate that scores anything other than recovery is not this method and can be shown not to be. Third, the reader's own context is theirs by the per-record rule, so the system cannot target what it cannot see, and the only thing it knows about you is the level and mode you chose to show it. A builder who wants a persuasion engine will have to build one. They cannot get there by turning a knob on this. That is the standard made structural: fidelity to a community that chose its own path, never persuasion toward anyone's, and not because I asked nicely.
6 of 7 · The pipeline
The pipeline, stated so anyone can build it

The whole thing is a short chain, and every link is a function anyone can implement.
Extraction. The corpus, prose, is read by a machine that extracts a structured graph: one idea per node, a title, a one-sentence summary of the idea, a provenance pointer to the source document and span, the node's role relative to its neighbors (what it sits inside, what sits inside it), its lane or door (which audience enters through it), and its depth from the trunk. The graph must be re-derivable: run extraction again on the same corpus and get the same graph. Rendering. For a given node, a target form, and a target level, a lens renders an expression: a short video, an audio track, a paragraph, a spatial placement, a linear sequence. The lens is a function of the idea and the form, not of the reader's identity. Gating. The expression and the node's idea go to the determination engine, which returns a probability that a reader at the target level can restate the idea, a verdict of pass, fail, or review, and the point in the expression where comprehension is lost. Pass releases the expression and lights the node. Fail regenerates the expression in a different form aimed at the drift point. Review routes to a human seat. Conditioning. Before rendering, the target form and level are read from the recipient's SOUL, which the recipient holds and the publisher cannot read, through the composition step of the second secret. The recipient may override the level at any time with the dial.
Navigation. The explorer renders the graph as a Buckyball of nodes hung in a tree: radius from the trunk is depth, angle is lane, and both are derived from the data, never hand-placed, so the map re-places itself as it fills. A filled ball seeds a self-similar one outward or inward. Nodes present in the graph but not yet filled, or not yet passing the gate, render fogged; filling and passing clear the fog. Tap a node and the geometry grows into a tree, leaf to twig to branch to trunk, which is the field guide the idea belongs to. The reference implementation of each of these steps is published with the kit as it is built. The method does not wait on it.

One more thing, which I will state in a sentence because it is where this is going. The graph that organizes the ideas for comprehension is the same shape as the real-world operation the ideas describe, a rescue network, a waste stream, a town's circularity hub, so the explorer built to teach the system is structurally the same instrument that later coordinates it. The map you learn from and the board you dispatch from are one object. That is the fractal claim proving itself one more time, and it is why the schema under all of this had to be recursive from the first day.
The conserved quantity is the true idea, never a conclusion anyone wants you to reach.
